Mali Rejects Ghana’s Winning Goal, Plans FIFA Protest for Match Replay

The Mali Football Association (MFA) is set to challenge Ghana’s 1-0 victory in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday, September 8, in Accra.

The MFA is preparing a formal protest to FIFA, claiming referee Badi Luxolo made critical errors that allowed Ghana’s decisive goal by Alexander Djiku in the 49th minute.

Djiku scored after Mali’s goalkeeper, Djigui Diarra, failed to hold onto a corner kick from Jordan Ayew. The MFA alleges a foul occurred in the build-up, arguing the goal should have been disallowed. Sports journalist Micky Junior reported that Mali intends to lodge complaints with both FIFA and the Ghana Football Association, seeking a replay of the match.

Despite Mali dominating much of the second half, Ghana’s resolute defense held firm, securing a win that strengthened their position at the top of Group I with 19 points. Mali, now mathematically unable to finish first, remains in contention for a playoff spot as one of the four best runners-up in the CAF qualifiers.

The protest adds tension to an already competitive Group I, where Ghana leads Madagascar by three points and Comoros by four. Mali’s head coach, Tom Saintfiet, also criticized Ghana’s defensive tactics, claiming they played with “fear” despite their talent. As FIFA reviews the MFA’s petition, the outcome could shake up the race for the 2026 World Cup.
