Mahama Unveils Ambitious Plan to Revive Kumasi’s Glory with $10B Infrastructure Push

President John Dramani Mahama, during his thank-you tour in the Ashanti Region on July 16, 2025, expressed deep gratitude to residents for their historic support in the 2024 elections, which marked a significant shift for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a traditionally New Patriotic Party (NPP) stronghold.
He pledged to restore Kumasi’s status as West Africa’s “garden city” through his administration’s $10 billion Big Push infrastructure agenda, spanning five years at $2 billion annually.
Addressing the region’s challenges, including waste management, traffic congestion, and stalled projects, Mahama committed to completing key developments such as Kejetia Market Phase Two, Suame Interchange, Krofrom and Mamponteng Markets, Afari Military Hospital, Sewua Regional Hospital, and the Okomfo Anokye Maternity and Children’s Block.
Additional priorities include rehabilitating the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and the KNUST Medical Center.
A cornerstone of the plan is the Greater Kumasi Bypass, designed to divert heavy-duty trucks from central Kumasi, reducing congestion and enhancing safety. The bypass will connect Ejisu to Mampong and Techiman Roads, facilitating travel to Burkina Faso and Mali. Further road improvements are planned for Tepa, Manso, and Adanse areas.
In aviation, Mahama announced that a contractor is mobilizing to extend the runway at Prempeh International Airport, enabling larger aircraft to land and boosting Kumasi’s global connectivity for travel, investment, and tourism. Progress is also underway for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, with construction set to begin in 2026.
Mahama praised traditional leaders, youth, women, and NDC supporters for their role in the electoral victory, emphasizing a government focused on continuity and results.
He underscored the importance of completing projects initiated by previous administrations, stating, “We are a government of continuity and results.”
With these commitments, Mahama aims to position the Ashanti Region as a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic and developmental revival.
