Mahama Unveils Ambitious Infrastructure Plan for Eastern Region, Thanks Residents for Peaceful 2024 Elections

On July 20, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama addressed a gathering at Jackson Park in Koforidua, praising the Eastern Region for maintaining peace during the 2024 elections and unveiling the “Big Push” infrastructure plan to address Ghana’s $1.5 billion annual infrastructure deficit.
Flanked by NDC leaders Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, Mahama credited the region’s “prayers and solidarity” for the NDC’s landslide victory.
The plan, funded by oil, gas, and export revenues, includes dualizing the Koforidua–Bunso–Apedwa road, completing the Osino–Anyinam bypass, building a modern Afram River bridge, and extending water supply to one million residents.
Education initiatives include reimbursing first-year academic fees and restoring nursing and teaching trainee allowances, with six months’ arrears already paid.
Mahama highlighted an audit revealing duplicate road contract payments, vowing legal action against errant contractors while clearing others to resume work.
He reaffirmed his commitment to completing the Eastern Regional Hospital project. Nene Sakite II, Konor of Manya Krobo and President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, welcomed Mahama, urging action on deteriorating infrastructure, illegal mining, and job creation.
He expressed concerns over the merger of the Ministry of Chieftaincy with Local Government and stalled renovations of the Regional House of Chiefs’ office, calling for transparency and renewed commitment.
Nene Sakite pledged the chiefs’ support for environmental protection and national unity under Mahama’s leadership.
