Mahama talks about unemployment, but all he does is ‘sack’ – Minority leader

Minority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has slammed President John Dramani Mahama’s approach to tackling unemployment, accusing him of prioritizing layoffs over job creation. This criticism comes on the heels of the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, directing the cancellation of all public sector appointments and recruitment made after December 7, 2024, citing non-compliance with good governance practices.
Afenyo-Markin pointed out that despite President Mahama acknowledging the staggering 2.2 million unemployed Ghanaians, his administration has been notable only for its dismissals since taking office. The Minority leader emphasized that the President’s actions have sparked widespread dissatisfaction among the public, particularly the youth.
“The President says we have 2.2 million unemployed Ghanaians, but all we’ve seen from his administration is ‘sack them’ in less than 100 days,” Afenyo-Markin stated. He further challenged President Mahama to take responsibility for addressing governance issues instead of simply lamenting about them.
Afenyo-Markin also criticized the President’s approach to governance, particularly his claim of reducing the number of ministers. “The President says he’s delivered fewer ministers, but he’s increased the number of presidential staffers and committees. It’s clear his strategy is ‘less is more,’ but it’s not working,” he said l.
