Mahama Launches ‘Big Push’ Infrastructure Drive: No Room for ‘Wheelbarrow Contractors’

President John Dramani Mahama launched his flagship Big Push infrastructure programme at Afienya in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, emphasizing that it will prioritize qualified contractors to fast-track major national projects, explicitly excluding unqualified “wheelbarrow contractors.”
Addressing requests from small-scale operators, Mahama stated, “There are a few wheelbarrow contractors who have come to me saying, ‘I hear they are distributing projects under the Big Push.
I want one.’ I say, ‘My friend, this is not for wheelbarrow contractors.’ You are my friend, but I won’t give it to you because it is not meant for wheelbarrow contractors.”c95b41
The GH¢13.9 billion initiative, funded through petroleum revenues and royalties, targets road modernization, inter-regional connectivity, and economic opportunities across all 16 regions, with an additional GH¢30 billion allocated for 2026 covering health, education, agriculture, and sports.
It repackages ongoing projects from previous administrations for efficiency, focusing on food-producing areas and industrial zones, with 166 constituencies slated for 10 km of roads and drains annually for four years.
The launch included sod-cutting for the Dawhenya–Ayikuma–Dodowa and Tema–Aflao roads, with a 24-month completion deadline, ensuring no region is left behind in Ghana’s economic transformation.
