Mahama Cuts Sod for 200km Wenchi-Wa Road Under Big Push Agenda

President John Dramani Mahama has broken ground for the reconstruction of the 200-kilometer Wenchi-Bole-Sawla-Wa road network, a key artery linking Bono East, Savannah, and Upper West regions to Burkina Faso and Mali, as part of the flagship Big Push infrastructure initiative.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony in Sawla on Wednesday, Mahama described the project as “a new corridor of progress” to reconnect markets, families, and regions while boosting trade with landlocked neighbors. “This will be a well-constructed international route to handle heavy traffic,” he said.

The package also includes rehabilitating the deteriorated Fufulso-Sawla Road, originally completed during Mahama’s first term but neglected under subsequent administrations. The same contractor will handle both projects.

Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza hailed the ambition: “No government has ever shown this level of commitment. You secured financing and kept the contract alive.”

The dual-carriage sections aim to ease congestion, reduce travel time from 8 to 4 hours, and spur economic activity in agriculture and commerce. Funding comes from the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund and multilateral partners.
