Mahama Chairs Special Cabinet Meeting Today on Constitutional Review Proposals

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to chair a special Cabinet meeting today to determine government’s official position on proposals emerging from Ghana’s constitutional review process.

The announcement was made by government spokesperson and Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, during an interview on PM Express.

Draft position paper already prepared

According to Kwakye Ofosu, the Attorney General and the President’s legal team have completed consultations and submitted a draft position paper to government after reviewing recommendations from the constitutional review committee.

He explained that the Cabinet session would focus mainly on discussing and deciding government’s stance on the proposals.

“So tomorrow, Thursday, 14th May, there will be a special cabinet session chaired by the president himself to consider the draft position paper,” he stated.

Government to decide which proposals to accept

The government spokesperson indicated that Cabinet would determine which recommendations should be accepted, amended, or rejected based on legal, political, and practical considerations.

He noted that some proposals may face constraints or implementation challenges, while others could be adopted fully or with modifications.

Position paper to be made public

Kwakye Ofosu said the final position paper approved by Cabinet would later be released publicly to allow Ghanaians to understand government’s response to the constitutional review process.

He also clarified that the government is not required to issue a white paper because the review was conducted by a committee rather than a commission of inquiry.

Implementation phase expected next

According to him, once Cabinet approves the position paper, government will move to establish an implementation committee to begin the next phase of the process.

He described the Cabinet meeting as a largely single-purpose session focused mainly on constitutional reforms.

The constitutional review process has attracted national attention, with many Ghanaians expecting reforms aimed at improving governance, accountability, and democratic institutions in Ghana.
