President John Dramani Mahama has welcomed measures by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and other airport agencies to stop workers from soliciting or begging visitors for tips.
The President said the practice damages Ghana’s image among international visitors and urged workers in the aviation sector to demonstrate professionalism, discipline and hospitality.
He made the remarks on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during the sod-cutting ceremony for the Multi-Tiered, Multi-Purpose Car Park and Airport Hotels Complex at the Accra International Airport.
President Mahama said every interaction between visitors and airport workers contributes to Ghana’s reputation, including immigration services, baggage handling, traffic management, cleanliness and customer service.
He commended the airport authorities for taking a firm position against workers who solicit tips from passengers.
The GACL has already dismissed two car park workers over alleged involvement in soliciting tips from passengers.
Meanwhile, the new airport development is expected to include two hotels, more than 2,000 parking bays, a pedestrian connection to the terminal, a shopping mall, food court, retail and office spaces, as well as a sky lounge and sky observatory for aircraft viewing.
President Mahama stressed that maintaining high standards of service at the airport is essential because the facility provides many international visitors with their first and last impression of Ghana.
