Mahama Announces Plans to Replace TV Licence with Public Media Levy

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that Cabinet is actively discussing reforms to Ghana’s TV licence law, with proposals to replace it with a broader public media levy to enhance funding for state broadcasters.
The revelation came during his visit to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) headquarters on Thursday, January 8, 2026, as part of ongoing engagements with public institutions.
“There are a few suggestions we have with regard to the so-called TV licence. And I think that our thinking is going in the same direction to amend that law to make it a public media levy of some sort,” President Mahama stated.
He explained that the new levy would expand revenue mobilization, providing stronger financial support for public media operations.
The President assured GBC management of stakeholder consultations before parliamentary submission: “When we’re ready, we’ll be discussing at Cabinet, but we’ll discuss with you what our thinking is before we finally go to Parliament and amend the law.”
Confident in the reforms’ impact, Mahama added: “I’m sure that with some of the suggestions we’ve got, you’ll be able to raise the amount of funding that it brings in and make it better able to do your work.”
The proposed changes aim to address longstanding funding challenges for institutions like GBC, ensuring greater efficiency in fulfilling their public service mandate.
