Private legal practitioner Tweneboah Kodua, popularly known as Lawyer TK, has opposed a recommendation by the Constitution Review Committee to lower the minimum age for presidential aspirants to 35.
He argued that 35 years is still relatively young and may not provide the depth of experience required to lead a country. According to him, higher age limits help ensure that candidates possess sufficient maturity, wisdom and life experience for the highest office.
Lawyer Kodua indicated that younger individuals may not fully understand complex economic and security issues or may act impulsively during crises.
He made the comments during an interview on STAR FM’s Adekye Nsoroma morning show.
On a related matter, Lawyer Kodua maintained that a proposed bill seeking to revive a tribunal system is unnecessary. He said many Ghanaians associate such tribunals with abuses during the AFRC and PNDC eras.
He argued that greater priority should be given to equipping and revising civil procedure rules in order to reduce the backlog of court cases.
Lawyer Kodua further suggested that the use of Twi in court proceedings could help speed up processes and resolve cases more efficiently.
According to him, many citizens struggle to understand complex legal English, making it difficult for them to follow their own trials and complicating interpretation.
He therefore appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to consider introducing Twi in court proceedings as part of efforts to improve access to justice.
