Kukurantumi Police Station Closed After Violent Youth Attack Over Suspect’s Death

The Eastern Regional Police Command has shut down the Kukurantumi Police Station in Abuakwa North Municipality and withdrawn all personnel following a violent attack by enraged youth on September 21, 2025.

The closure was ordered by Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno to ensure officer safety after the mob assaulted the station and barracks.

The attack, which began at approximately 7:00 a.m., was triggered by the death of Bright Kena, alias D-Ball, a suspect arrested for unlawful entry, stealing, and possession of suspected marijuana. Kena died while receiving treatment at Kukurantumi Community Hospital, prompting allegations of police brutality by an officer nicknamed “Kumador.”

Youth stormed the station, pelting officers with stones, clubs, and other implements, and attempted to set the building ablaze. Two officers sustained eye injuries and were treated and discharged, while police vehicles, including a Toyota Tundra (GP 4004) and the Eastern Regional Police Operations Commander’s Toyota Hilux, had their windshields smashed.

A reinforcement team from the Eastern Regional Police Counter Terrorism Unit and Akyem Tafo Division restored calm, but the station remains closed, with services redirected to nearby facilities.

The Police Professional Standards Bureau and Criminal Investigations Department are probing Kena’s death, analyzing video footage to identify and prosecute attackers.

The Command, via Supt. George Peprah Mills, has engaged Kena’s family and community leaders, assuring a thorough investigation and urging the public to resolve grievances lawfully. The incident underscores rising tensions over custodial deaths, with locals demanding accountability as the investigation continues.
