Kotoka International Airport to Be Renamed Accra International Airport – Majority Leader

The government plans to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has confirmed.
Mr. Ayariga made the announcement while speaking to journalists ahead of the first sitting of the Second Session of the 9th Parliament on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
He explained that the decision is part of broader efforts to reflect Ghana’s democratic values and national identity in public institutions and landmarks.
“Government intends to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” he stated.
The Majority Leader added that a bill will be presented to Parliament to formalize the change in line with established legal procedures.
The proposed renaming is expected to spark significant public debate, given the historical importance of the airport’s current name — which honours Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a key figure in Ghana’s post-independence history.
Once the bill is laid before the House, Parliament is anticipated to play a central role in deliberations and decision-making on the matter.
The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions about national symbols, heritage and the naming of public facilities under the current administration. Further details on the timeline and legislative process are expected in the coming weeks.
