Ghanaian Afrobeats musician Kojo Blak has opened up about the challenges emerging artistes face in breaking into the music industry, describing the journey to securing a first hit song as the most difficult stage of an artiste’s career.
Speaking on the On The Line podcast, Kojo Blak said aspiring musicians have to put in significant effort to gain recognition and build an audience.
“Getting your first hit is the hardest as an artist. That is where there’s more work. When you get people to know you, it becomes a little easier,” he said.
The musician also explained that he does not view other artistes as competitors, saying his main focus is on improving his own abilities and surpassing his previous achievements.
“I’m not in competition with anybody. I’m in competition with myself.”
He said this approach also applies to his live performances, adding that he does not allow pressure from the industry to affect his creative process.
Kojo Blak further revealed that his upcoming debut album is not being created primarily with the festive season or major performances in mind.
“I don’t really care about festive seasons. I’m not making the album to go and perform on big shows,” he said.
The musician is expected to release his debut album, which will feature collaborations with other artistes.
The project is expected to mark another significant step in Kojo Blak’s growing music career as he continues to establish himself in Ghana’s Afrobeats scene.
