Ken Agyapong’s Campaign Declares Divine Mandate in NPP Flagbearer Race

The campaign team of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a leading contender in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race, has proclaimed his candidacy as a divinely ordained mission to restore order and usher in a new era for the party and Ghana. Speaking on JoyNews on October 10, 2025, spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng likened Agyapong to the biblical David, replacing a “rejected Saul” in a transformative moment for Ghana’s political landscape.
Agyapong secured the No. 1 spot on the ballot during the NPP’s balloting exercise on October 10 at the party’s Asylum Down headquarters, ahead of the January 31, 2026, presidential primary. Kwarteng emphasized that while the top position offers visibility and marketing advantages, the campaign’s focus remains on Agyapong’s divine calling: “We are not so much fixated on numbers… Ken’s candidature is more divine than we can imagine.”
Drawing a biblical analogy, Kwarteng stated, “God gave [Israel] Saul, but when conditions went down, God gave them David. Saul has been rejected, a new David is coming in, and that David is Honourable Kennedy Agyapong.” The campaign sees the No. 1 ballot position as a strategic edge, particularly for undecided voters, but prioritizes Agyapong’s message of discipline and national development.
Agyapong faces four other aspirants Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (No. 3), Dr. Bryan Acheampong (No. 2), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (No. 4), and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong (No. 5) in a competitive race. Kwarteng’s bold claims align with earlier statements, including warnings that Ghana could “crash” without Agyapong’s leadership in 2028, and reflect his vocal stances on issues like the presidential jet controversy. Social media reactions on X show polarized support, with some praising Agyapong’s passion and others questioning the divine narrative.
