Isak Eyes Move Away from Newcastle Amid Liverpool Interest

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has expressed a desire to explore transfer options this summer, missing the club’s pre-season tour of Asia due to a reported minor thigh injury, though speculation suggests his absence may also be linked to transfer interest.

Despite Newcastle’s 30-man squad selection for the tour, the 25-year-old Swedish international was excluded, with manager Eddie Howe previously stating Isak would “absolutely” be part of the squad for the Singapore and South Korea matches

Sources indicate that several top European clubs are aware of Isak’s ambition to take the next step in his career. Liverpool, despite recently signing Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike for £69m, remain interested in Isak, with reports suggesting they are prepared to offer around £120m, though Newcastle value him at £150m and maintain he is not for sale

Isak, who scored 27 goals in 42 appearances last season, including a crucial goal in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final win, has three years left on his contract, which runs until June 2028. Newcastle, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, face no immediate financial pressure to sell due to their compliance with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). However, Isak’s reported frustration stems from unfulfilled expectations of a new contract, with his current deal falling short of his £300,000-a-week salary demands

Howe has emphasized his desire to retain Isak, describing him as “irreplaceable” and crucial for Newcastle’s ambitions in the Premier League and Champions League. The club has explored replacements like Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, but their focus remains on keeping Isak, potentially with a new contract featuring a release clause

Liverpool’s interest persists, but their recent £300m spending, including a record £116m for Florian Wirtz, may require player sales to fund a move for Isak. Arsenal, previously linked, are now focused on Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres, while other clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea are unlikely to pursue due to financial constraints or existing striker signings. Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal has also been mentioned, but a move there seems improbable given Isak’s career stage

Newcastle’s firm stance and Isak’s contract situation suggest a transfer is not imminent, but his desire to explore options could intensify discussions as the transfer window, closing September 1, 2025, approaches
