Irish Government Strongly Condemns Missile Attack on UNIFIL Base That Injured Ghanaian Peacekeepers

The Irish Government has issued a firm condemnation of a missile attack on a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) base in southern Lebanon, which left three Ghanaian soldiers seriously injured.
The airstrike targeted a UNIFIL position in the tense buffer zone along the Israel-Lebanon border, an area long marked by friction between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia. Ghanaian troops form part of the multinational peacekeeping force deployed to monitor ceasefire compliance and help prevent escalations in the region.
In a statement released on March 6, Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the incident as “reckless” and highlighted the grave risks international peacekeepers face while carrying out their duties in such volatile environments.
“I strongly condemn the reckless strike on a UNIFIL base in southern Lebanon that has left a number of Ghanaian peacekeepers seriously injured,” Taoiseach Martin said. “The role of peacekeepers is sacrosanct, and all efforts must be made to prevent them from coming into harm’s way.”
The attack serves as a sobering reminder of the persistent dangers confronting UN personnel in southern Lebanon, where UNIFIL has operated for decades under mandates from the United Nations Security Council. Peacekeepers, including contingents from Ghana and other contributing nations like Ireland, work to uphold stability amid recurring violations of ceasefire agreements.
Ireland, a longstanding supporter of UN peacekeeping missions and a contributor to UNIFIL in the past, reiterated its commitment to protecting those who serve under the blue flag. The government called for full respect for the protections afforded to peacekeepers under international law and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint to safeguard civilian lives and UN personnel.
The incident follows a series of recent attacks on Ghanaian positions in the same region, raising fresh concerns about the safety of peacekeepers amid the broader escalation of hostilities. Ghana has already lodged a formal protest with the United Nations, demanding a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible.
As tensions persist along the Blue Line, both Ireland and Ghana have emphasized the critical importance of preserving the integrity and security of UNIFIL operations to prevent further deterioration of the fragile situation in southern Lebanon.
