Holy Child College of Education Marks 80th Anniversary with Urgent Plea for Chairs, Roads, and Vehicles

As Holy Child College of Education launched its 80th-anniversary celebrations under the theme “80 Years of Excellence, Empowerment, and Innovation in Teacher Education in the 21st Century,”

Principal Dr. Francis Hull Adams issued a stark appeal for urgent infrastructure support, citing a critical shortage of academic chairs, deplorable internal roads, and lack of operational vehicles as major barriers to quality education.

Speaking at the launch event in Takoradi, Dr. Adams highlighted the college’s unique role as the only teacher training institution in the Western Region, serving 1,472 female students—all pursuing degrees and diplomas in Early Childhood Education.

“Our growing student population has led to a shortage of academic chairs, and we urge the Municipal Assembly to provide support,” he said,

adding that poor road conditions and safety concerns around campus further compound challenges.

“We’re appealing to government agencies, NGOs, and well-wishers to assist us in rehabilitating our roads. Furthermore, we desperately need operational vehicles to facilitate our student teaching programs, which require frequent transportation to various districts,” Dr. Adams emphasized.

Despite the setbacks, he commended the Mahama administration for reviving two stalled projects: a 300-capacity hostel and a lecture hall complex, both now back under construction with new contractors on site. “We’re hopeful that work will resume without further interruptions,” he noted.

Established in 1946 as a Catholic faith-based institution and accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Holy Child remains a beacon of women’s empowerment in education. Alumna Dr. Mrs. Becky Boakye-Yiadom, Central Regional Quality Assurance Manager at the National Health Insurance Authority, praised its legacy: “This college has never settled for mediocrity. It gave us wings to stand tall, find our voices, and lift others.”
