Historic Moment: Sudan Reach AFCON 2025 Knockout Stage Under Ghanaian Coach Kwesi Appiah!

In an incredible turnaround, Sudan have qualified for the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco – their first knockout appearance in 13 years!

The Falcons of Jediane (Sudan’s nickname) secured their spot as one of the best third-placed teams, thanks to Morocco’s 3-0 victory over Zambia on December 29. This result pushed Sudan through even before their final group game.

Sudan finished third in Group E (with Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Equatorial Guinea) after a key 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea – only their second AFCON victory since winning the tournament as hosts in 1970, and their first since 2012.

They lost 0-2 to Burkina Faso in their last match but had already done enough to advance. This is huge for a team playing amid ongoing conflict back home – football bringing joy and unity to the nation.

All credit goes to calm and experienced Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah who has built a resilient, disciplined side. His leadership has turned Sudan into surprise contenders, defying the odds against stronger teams.

Sudan now join Africa’s big names like Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, and Ivory Coast in the knockouts. They face a tough test next, likely against Senegal, but they’re dreaming big and ready to keep fighting.
