Health Minister Convenes Two-Day Retreat to Boost Sector Productivity and Efficiency

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has opened a two-day leadership retreat for Ghana’s health sector, focused on reviewing 2025 performance and charting strategic priorities for 2026 to deliver quality, efficient, and accessible healthcare nationwide.
The programme, themed “Ministry of Health 2025 Performance Review and Outlook for 2026,” began on Monday, January 12, 2026, and brings together the Chief Director and directors of the Ministry of Health, board chairs and members, heads of agencies, civil society representatives, and other key stakeholders.
Activities include detailed performance reviews, presentations from Ministry directorates and major institutions, thematic discussions, and intensive strategic planning sessions.
Directorates presenting include Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation; Human Resource for Health; Infrastructure; Training and Capacity Development; and Technical Assistance and Donor Coordination.
Major health institutions delivering reports and outlooks are the Ghana Health Service, National Health Insurance Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and Tamale Teaching Hospital.
Regulatory and professional bodies participating include the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Medical and Dental Council, Allied Health Professions Council, and Pharmacy Council.
The 2026 planning segment, led by Minister Akandoh, centres on aligning sector priorities, policy direction, and collaborative actions to accelerate Universal Health Coverage, expand access to essential services, and build system resilience against emerging public health threats.
The retreat aims to promote high-performance standards, improve resource efficiency, encourage evidence-based decision-making, and strengthen inter-agency coordination for better service delivery.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to developing a responsive, people-centered health system capable of meeting current demands and future challenges effectively.
