GRTCC Suspends Planned 20% Public Transport Fare Hike Effective August 8

The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has officially suspended a proposed 20% increase in public transport fares, which was set to take effect today, Friday, August 8, 2025.

The decision was announced by the Ministry of Transport following a high-level meeting with road transport unions held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The suspension comes as a relief to commuters amid the ongoing three-day national mourning period, declared by President John Dramani Mahama in response to the tragic helicopter crash on August 6 that claimed eight lives, including two ministers. The ministry stated that the decision reflects a commitment to ease the financial burden on the public during this period of grief, with further consultations planned to address transport sector concerns.

Details of the meeting and the reasons behind the suspension were not fully disclosed, but the move has been welcomed by transport unions and passengers alike. The ministry has assured stakeholders that updates on future fare adjustments will be communicated in due course.
