Veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Nortey has died at the age of 89, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in Ghana’s theatre, television and film industry.
Her death has been described as a major loss to the country’s creative arts community and to generations of Ghanaians who grew up watching her performances.
Former Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh paid tribute to the late actress, describing her as one of the pioneers who helped build Ghana’s entertainment industry at a time when the sector had limited resources and opportunities.
Grace Nortey was known for her memorable roles in productions including Kofi Nkrabea, Osofo Dadzie, Taxi Driver, Sinking Sands and Beasts of No Nation.
Dr Prempeh said her ability to combine humour with depth allowed her to create characters that became part of the collective memory of Ghanaians.
He noted that her contribution went beyond entertainment, as the creative industry plays an important role in preserving Ghanaian stories and culture while creating opportunities for younger generations.
He said her passing should also be seen as an opportunity to celebrate the legacy she leaves behind and the foundation she helped create for those who followed.
Dr Prempeh extended his condolences to Grace Nortey’s family, colleagues, the wider creative arts community and her numerous admirers.
