GRA Intercepts Massive Tramadol Haul at Tema Port, Nine Officials Arrested

The Ghana Revenue Authority has uncovered one of the largest tramadol smuggling attempts at Tema Port, seizing 299 cartons containing 146,932,000 tablets of Tramadol Hydrochloride (250mg and 225mg), with a total weight of approximately 34,847.2 kilograms.

In a press release issued on March 3, the Authority revealed that the consignment, hidden inside container number TGHU6228715, was falsely declared as household items including kettles, blenders, pressing irons and energy-saving bulbs. The shipment originated from the United Arab Emirates.

The breakthrough came after intelligence-led operations by the Preventive Unit of the Customs Division led to the container’s targeted detention on February 26. A joint re-examination on March 1 confirmed the concealed narcotics.

Nine public officials have been arrested and granted police enquiry bail in connection with the seizure. They include five Customs officers as well as representatives from the Narcotics Control Commission, Port Security, the Energy Commission and the Ghana Standards Authority.

GRA Commissioner-General Anthony Kwesi Sarpong described the interception as a clear demonstration of the Authority’s strengthened enforcement drive. He highlighted intensified intelligence operations, tighter compliance systems and deeper inter-agency collaboration aimed at protecting national security, public health and the integrity of Ghana’s ports and trade corridors.

The seizure serves as a strong warning that attempts to smuggle illicit goods or undermine revenue systems will face firm consequences. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding borders and maintaining strict surveillance at all entry points.

Investigations are ongoing, with the GRA working closely with relevant security agencies to trace the full network behind the shipment and bring all involved parties to justice.
