The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have formally requested a review of public transport fares in the country.
In a joint press release dated September 3, 2026, the two transport bodies said the request had been submitted to the Ministry of Transport in accordance with the Administrative Instrument governing the determination and review of public transport fares.
According to the unions, the request forms part of the established consultative process for reviewing transport fares, which takes into consideration various factors affecting the operations of commercial road transport services.
The GPRTU and GRTCC said discussions with the Ministry of Transport are expected to commence soon, after which the outcome of the consultations will be communicated to the public.
The two organisations stressed that the fare review process was still ongoing and urged drivers, station masters, transport owners and members of the public to remain calm and await the outcome.
“We therefore urge all drivers, station masters, transport owners, and the general public to remain calm and await the outcome of the process,” the statement said.
The development comes amid growing concerns over the cost of operating commercial transport services and the potential impact on passengers.
The unions, however, did not announce any new fares in the statement, indicating that any changes will depend on the outcome of consultations with the Ministry of Transport.
The press release was signed by Mr Godfred Abulbire, General Secretary of the GPRTU of TUC, Ghana, and Mr Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, General Secretary of the GRTCC.
No New Fare Yet
The request by the transport operators does not constitute an immediate increase in transport fares. Any approved adjustment is expected to be communicated after the consultation and review process has been completed.
