Gov’t Confirms National Cathedral Costs Soar to $97M for Unfinished Foundation

During a press briefing in Accra on July 18, 2025, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communication, revealed that Ghana has incurred $97 million in expenses for the stalled National Cathedral project, despite construction halting at the foundation level.

This figure includes a previously unreported $39 million in outstanding payments owed to the contractor, in addition to the $58 million already spent.

Ofosu highlighted that the contract structure causes costs to accrue daily, even with no progress on the site, describing the situation as a financial burden.

The announcement follows the National Cathedral Board’s opposition to converting the state-owned land into a Cultural Convention Centre, with ongoing investigations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor into procurement issues.
