Government Orders Evacuation of Students from Bawku, Nalerigu Amid Curfew and Conflict

The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate evacuation of students from educational institutions in Bawku, Nalerigu, and surrounding areas affected by the escalating Bawku chieftaincy conflict, which has tragically targeted students.

In a statement issued on July 27, 2025, by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, the government emphasized that the 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM curfew, effective from July 27, aims to create a secure environment for this evacuation.

The curfew, announced by the Ministry of the Interior on the advice of the Upper East and North East Regional Security Councils, follows a surge in violence, including the July 26, 2025, shooting of two students at Nalerigu Senior High School and a similar attack at Bawku Senior High School, both suspected to be linked to the Bawku conflict.

The government has directed the Ghana Armed Forces to shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement, deploying troops to enforce the curfew, maintain law and order, and protect residents.

Ofosu’s statement highlighted that the curfew facilitates the safe relocation of students, some of whom have been directly targeted in the unrest. A total ban on arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons has been enforced, with violators facing arrest and prosecution. The government urged chiefs, elders, and community leaders to pursue non-violent resolutions to restore stability.

This response comes amid criticism from Nalerigu/Gambaga MP Nurudeen Mohammed Mumuni, who described the curfew as poorly coordinated, with significant non-compliance due to resident frustration and distrust, as reported on Channel One Newsroom.
