The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), has announced the implementation of a contra flow arrangement to facilitate Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on major corridors into the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra during peak hours.
The arrangement will take effect from Tuesday, 29 September 2026, and will operate in the morning from 6am to 9am and in the evening from 4pm to 8pm.
The intervention forms part of Government’s broader efforts to improve public transportation, reduce congestion and provide more reliable and efficient mobility for commuters travelling into and out of Accra’s Central Business District.
The contra flow arrangement will initially cover the following major commuter corridors:
Amasaman – Accra Corridor
Adenta – Accra Corridor
Kasoa – Accra Corridor
These corridors have been identified for priority intervention because of the significant volumes of commuters travelling to and from the Central Business District during peak periods. The arrangement will be implemented on designated sections of these corridors, subject to approved traffic management and road safety requirements.
The intervention is expected to:
i. improve the reliability and punctuality of Ayalolo BRT services;
ii. reduce journey times for commuters;
iii. ease congestion on major approaches to the CBD;
iv. encourage commuters to use mass public transportation;
v. reduce the pressure created by large volumes of private vehicles; and
vi. improve overall urban mobility within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
During designated peak periods, selected sections of the identified corridors will be temporarily configured to allow authorised Ayalolo BRT buses to travel in the priority direction against the normal flow of general traffic.
The designated contra flow lanes will be strictly reserved for Ayalolo BRT operations.
Private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles and other unauthorised road users will not be permitted to use the designated BRT contra flow lanes.
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) will provide operational traffic control and enforcement support along the affected corridors at strategic locations and major intersections. Road users are urged to cooperate fully with MTTD personnel throughout the implementation.
The Government therefore appeals to motorists, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, businesses and residents along the affected corridors to support the intervention.
There will be a press briefing by the management of Ayalolo BRT on Monday, 28 September 2026 at 10:00am to provide the general public with more details on this intervention.
Government will continue to engage transport operators, road users, local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that the intervention delivers the intended benefits while maintaining road safety.
The public is urged to cooperate with traffic officers and give priority to safe and efficient movement of mass public transport.
