Officials of Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York have visited the family of 24-year-old Joseph Owusu, whose tragic death under yet-unexplained circumstances was announced to his mother, Mavis, on Saturday, 31st October by New York City Police.

The visit, undertaken on 4th November 2026 on the directive of the Head of Mission, Ambassador and Permanent Representative Samuel Yao Kumah, was led by Deputy Permanent Representative Ben Dotsei Malor and Consul-General Anthony El-Adas.

The Mission team conveyed the condolences of the Government of Ghana to the bereaved family. The bereavement visit was undertaken on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who phoned in and expressed the heartfelt condolences, support and solidarity of President Mahama and the Government of Ghana with Madam Mavis and her family.

“I have been shocked and saddened by this tragic news, especially coming on the heels of the horrible news of the killing of 15-year-old Javits, also in the Bronx, New York,” the minister said. He assured the bereaved family that the Government of Ghana stands firmly with them and will work with the relevant authorities and agencies of the United States Government to ensure that justice is served.

Joseph Owusu, a 24-year-old Ghanaian, worked as a caregiver supporting persons with disabilities. He also served as a chorister at his local Methodist church. He is remembered by the family as a beloved son and brother, and his tragic loss has left his family and community devastated.

His brother, Kwadwo, called strongly for justice for Joseph through a thorough and transparent investigation to be conducted by the police into the circumstances surrounding his death and for those responsible to be brought to justice.

Police have indicated to the family that an autopsy is being conducted on the body of the late Joseph Owusu, as their investigations continue into the crime.
