Ghana’s Agricultural Sector Reels from Devastating Drought: $500M Relief Package Announced
Ghana's Agricultural Sector in Crisis

Accra, Ghana – The 2024 drought has ravaged Ghana’s agricultural sector, resulting in an estimated GH¢3.5 billion investment loss and GH¢10.4 billion revenue loss for farmers.
The drought, described as the worst since 1982/83, affected 62% of Ghana’s staple grain production regions, including the Northern, North-East, Upper West, Upper East, Bono, Bono East, and Oti Regions.
In response, the government has announced a $500 million relief package to support affected farmers. However, concerns surround the transparency and accountability of the disbursement process.
A National Conference on Climate Change has urged the government to formulate a national policy on agroecology to promote sustainable agricultural practices, enhance biodiversity, and build resilience against climate change.
