Ghanaian YouTuber Goshers Faces GH¢20M Lawsuit from Star Oil Over Defamatory Video

Star Oil Ghana has threatened popular Ghanaian YouTuber Benjamin Kojo Mensah, known as Goshers, with a GH¢20 million lawsuit for allegedly spreading “baseless, unfounded, and malicious” claims in a video accusing the company of shortchanging him at its Anyinase fuel station near Elubo.

The legal action, outlined in a letter dated September 4, 2025, from Star Oil’s lawyers, Vanem & Associates, demands that Goshers retract the video, issue a public apology, and face potential punitive damages if he fails to comply.

In the video, Goshers claimed he paid GH¢190 for fuel, expecting to spend GH¢150, alleging discrepancies in the quantity dispensed. Star Oil refuted the claims, citing CCTV footage, three independent 10-litre can tests yielding 10.02L, 10.03L, and 10.04L, and flow-rate verification, all confirming accurate calibration of its dispensers. The company stated it contacted Goshers via phone and WhatsApp to present these findings, but he refused to retract the video, responding dismissively on Facebook with “All the best.”

Star Oil further accused Goshers of escalating the issue by falsely claiming he received threats from a company representative, a statement the company denies as defamatory. The fuel giant is demanding that Goshers delete the video from YouTube, issue an “unqualified apology” on both YouTube and Facebook within 24 hours, and keep the apology visible for 21 days. Failure to comply will trigger a GH¢20 million lawsuit, additional punitive damages, and a perpetual injunction to prevent further defamatory content.

The dispute has drawn attention to the influence of social media personalities and the legal risks they face when making unverified claims against businesses. As of now, Goshers has not publicly responded to the legal notice, and the deadline for compliance has lapsed, raising the likelihood of imminent court action.
