Ghana High Commission Warns Ghanaians in Durban Ahead of Anti-Immigration Protest

The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has issued a safety advisory to Ghanaians living in Durban and nearby areas ahead of a planned anti-immigration protest scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

In a statement released by the Mission, the High Commission said intelligence available to it indicates that an anti-immigration demonstration is expected to take place in Durban, raising concerns over the safety of foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.

The Mission urged members of the Ghanaian community to exercise heightened vigilance and avoid locations where demonstrations or large public gatherings are expected.

It also advised Ghanaians not to engage in confrontations, provocations, or counter-demonstrations during the protest period.

According to the statement, Ghanaians in the area should carry valid identification and immigration documents at all times and cooperate with local law enforcement authorities when necessary.

“As a precautionary measure, close shops and businesses,” the advisory stated.

The High Commission further encouraged Ghanaian nationals to remain calm, law-abiding and alert throughout the period of the planned protest.

The Mission noted that it is engaging relevant South African authorities and closely monitoring developments to help ensure the safety and welfare of Ghanaians living in the country.

It added that emergency assistance remains available through the official communication channels of the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria.
