Ghana Football Association Appoints Kim Lars Björkegren as Black Queens Head Coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has introduced Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens, Ghana’s national women’s football team.

Björkegren, a seasoned tactician with nearly 20 years of experience, succeeds Nora Hauptle, whose contract with the GFA ended in December 2024. The appointment was confirmed in a GFA statement released on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.

“Swedish Football Coach, Kim Lars Björkegren, has been appointed new Head Coach of the Senior National Female team, the Black Queens. He replaces erstwhile Coach, Nora Hauptle, whose contract with the GFA expired at the end of December 2024,” the statement revealed.

A Promising Career Transition

Björkegren’s football journey began in Ljungsbro, Sweden, as a player with Allsvenska Åtvidabergs FF, a top-tier Swedish team. However, a career-ending injury at age 22 led him to pursue coaching—a decision that has shaped his professional legacy.

Armed with a UEFA A License, Björkegren has accumulated a wealth of coaching experience both in Sweden and abroad. His notable accomplishments include leading Apollon Ladies to a league championship in Cyprus and winning the prestigious Damallsvenskan title with Linköpings FC in Sweden.

In the 2020-2021 season, he was recognized as Cyprus’s Coach of the Season, further solidifying his reputation as a top-tier coach.

A New Chapter for the Black Queens

Björkegren takes over a team that saw significant progress under Nora Hauptle and is expected to build on her achievements. With his extensive experience and track record of success, the GFA and fans are optimistic about the future of the Black Queens under his leadership.
