Ghana and Savannah, Georgia, Partner to Bring Electric Buses to Accra

In a significant step toward sustainable urban transport, Accra is set to procure electric Metro Mass Transit buses from Hyundai through Savannah-based investors, as part of a landmark city-to-city partnership between Ghana and Savannah, Georgia.
Announced during a courtesy visit by Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson II to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in 2024, the initiative was praised by Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey for its potential to reduce fares, promote environmental sustainability, and create jobs through increased ridership.
The partnership, formalized in February 2024, focuses on education, culture, urban planning, and tourism, marking Savannah’s first official tie with an African city. Mayor Johnson, leading a delegation including Dwayne Stevens, Marty Johnson, and Dr. Joseph Silver Sr., lauded Accra’s leadership and hospitality, emphasizing the shared history and responsibility to advance together.
The electric bus procurement builds on Ghana’s broader push for e-mobility, following the launch of a pilot program with 10 electric buses in November 2024, managed by Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL).
