Ghana and Gambia Unite for ECOWAS Free Roaming Implementation
The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Gambia today. This partnership aims to advance the ECOWAS free roaming initiative, with full deployment expected by the first half of 2025.
The agreement marks a critical step in facilitating seamless and affordable cross-border communication for citizens traveling between Ghana and The Gambia.
Towards Affordable Telecom Services
The MOU will empower MNOs from both countries to begin technical and regulatory discussions, paving the way for the practical implementation of ECOWAS roaming laws. According to the NCA, the initiative will promote stronger economic and social ties within the region.
Prof. Ezer Osei Yeboah-Boateng, the NCA’s Deputy Director General for Technical Operations and head of Ghana’s delegation described the move as pivotal for regional integration.
“This collaboration with The Gambia marks the next phase in extending affordable telecom services across the region. It reflects a shared commitment to fostering economic growth, tourism, and unity in West Africa,” he stated.
He further highlighted Ghana’s leadership in regional connectivity through bilateral roaming agreements with Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Benin, emphasizing the importance of expanding these efforts to The Gambia.
A Shared Vision for Connectivity
Representing The Gambia, Solo Sima, Deputy Director General of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, expressed optimism about the ECOWAS free roaming initiative. He noted its potential to bridge communication gaps, create employment opportunities, and stimulate business growth.
“This partnership has the power to connect Africa, but it’s essential that regulators evaluate emerging technologies like 5G to ensure agreements remain flexible and consumer-focused,” he added.
