GFA Boss Reveals “Tough” Decision to Retain Otto Addo as Black Stars Coach
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, has disclosed that the decision to keep Otto Addo as the Black Stars head coach was not an easy one.
Despite intense criticism and the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the GFA’s Executive Council ultimately decided to retain Addo’s services.
Asante Twum revealed that the Council members were deeply divided on the issue, with some expressing strong reservations about Addo’s continued tenure.
“It was a very tense atmosphere where the Council members espoused their feelings and their positions on the future of the technical team,” he said in an interview on Sporty FM. “Not all of them said yes. It was very, very difficult.”
The meeting had to be adjourned at one point due to a stalemate, and the Council members had to reconvene to reach a decision.
Asante Twum described the process as “tough” and “not straightforward,” with the Council members carefully weighing their options before deciding to retain Addo.
The Black Stars coach will now face the challenge of proving his doubters wrong when the team assembles again in March for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
