GCMC Warns of Rising Risk as 30% of LPG Cylinders Found Defective

The Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company has raised alarm over growing household safety risks, revealing that nearly 30% of gas cylinders submitted for refurbishment are unfit for use.
Safety Concerns
According to the company, the high number of defective cylinders poses serious dangers, including:
Gas leaks
Fire outbreaks
Explosions
These risks have been linked to past incidents that caused significant damage to lives and property across communities.
Call for Expansion of Safety System
Managing Director Abdul-Rahman Mankir is urging the expansion of the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) nationwide.
Currently, the system is being implemented in:
Accra
Kumasi
Tema
He believes extending the programme will significantly improve safety outcomes.
What is the CRM?
The CRM, championed by the National Petroleum Authority, changes how LPG cylinders are used:
Consumers exchange empty cylinders for filled ones
Cylinders are professionally inspected and maintained
Faulty cylinders are removed from circulation
This replaces the old system where individuals refilled their own cylinders at fuel stations.
Low Awareness a Challenge
GCMC says public awareness remains low—even in some parts of Accra—limiting participation in the programme.
Officials are calling for:
More public education campaigns
Stronger collaboration with regulators
Increased access to exchange points
Bottom Line
The findings highlight a critical issue: many households may be unknowingly using unsafe cylinders. Expanding the CRM and improving awareness could play a key role in preventing avoidable disasters and protecting lives.
