Freddie Blay Remanded by Akropong Circuit Court Over Alleged Demolition Dispute at Kitase

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has been remanded into custody by the Akropong Circuit Court following his arrest on Monday, March 16, 2026. He is scheduled to reappear before the court on April 9, 2026.

Blay was handed over to the Akropong Police by officers from Accra after a warrant for his arrest was executed. The case stems from an alleged demolition order said to have been issued by Blay concerning a house under construction on a parcel of land at Kitase.

According to court records, the landowner filed a complaint with the police, leading to an invitation for Blay to assist with investigations. He is accused of failing to honour the invitation. Charges were subsequently filed, but Blay did not appear for his scheduled arraignment in April 2025, prompting the court to issue a warrant for his arrest.

Sources close to Blay have stated that he was unaware of the warrant prior to his arrest. They explained that the dispute revolves around land he purchased in 1994, which later became the subject of litigation. The sources insist that Blay did not order the demolition of any building. Instead, they claim he directed the clearing of a bare piece of land in January 2026 to prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for dangerous animals, including reptiles.

The sources further noted that the complainant had previously secured a favourable ruling at the High Court in Koforidua, but that decision has since been appealed. They added that efforts to serve the complainant with appeal-related processes have been unsuccessful. Aside from the ongoing appeal, Blay was reportedly unaware of any other court proceedings against him until the warrant was executed.

The matter has drawn significant attention given Blay’s prominent political background and the longstanding nature of the land dispute. The case continues under judicial review, with Blay remanded pending his next court appearance on April 9.
