Four-Year-Old Boy Drowns in Uncovered Culvert at Nkawkaw; Family Blames Kwahu West Assembly for Negligence

A family in Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region has accused the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly of negligence following the tragic death of a four-year-old boy who drowned in an uncovered culvert behind their home.
The child’s mother, Yaa Boakye, said the incident occurred when her son was playing with a friend near the open drain and slipped into the culvert.
Speaking to Crime Check, Madam Boakye explained that the family later engaged officials of the Assembly over the incident, insisting that the death could have been prevented if the culvert had been properly covered.
According to her, officials initially assured the family of support during funeral arrangements but later provided them with an amount of GH₵ 500.
She further alleged that the Assembly justified the amount by claiming financial constraints.
“They told us that if they had money, they would not be collecting GH₵ 4 from motorists,” she said.
The grieving mother also claimed that shortly after the incident, the Assembly moved quickly to cover the culvert, a decision the family believes was an attempt to avoid responsibility.
The tragedy has sparked anger among residents, who are questioning why the uncovered drain was left in a residential area without safety measures.
Many residents say the incident highlights growing concerns about uncovered drains and inadequate safety enforcement in parts of Nkawkaw.
Authorities of the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly are yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
