Former NPP Parliamentary Candidates Endorse Dr Bawumia for 2028 Presidential Bid

A group of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates has formally endorsed Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as their preferred candidate to lead the party into the 2028 presidential election, describing the move as a strong signal of unity and growing momentum within the party.
The endorsement was announced at a press conference on January 8, where the former candidates said their collective decision further consolidates internal support for Dr Bawumia’s bid to seek re-election as the party’s flagbearer.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Andrew Agyapa Mercer noted that the declaration builds on an earlier endorsement by 63 NPP Members of Parliament elected in 2024, indicating increasing alignment among the party’s frontline representatives behind a single candidate.
According to the group, the endorsement followed extensive consultations across the party’s structures and broader society. These engagements involved polling station and constituency executives, former party officers, councils of elders and patrons, as well as youth groups, market women, farmers, fisherfolk, business leaders, opinion leaders, religious leaders and traditional authorities.
They said feedback from the consultations revealed overwhelming support for Dr Bawumia across constituencies, stressing that their decision was based on careful analysis, conviction and duty, and not influenced by inducement, coercion or external pressure.
The former candidates described Dr Bawumia, a former Vice President of Ghana, as a visionary leader with proven competence, integrity and innovation. They cited his role in Ghana’s digital transformation, contributions to economic management, and leadership in initiatives such as the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and broader macroeconomic stabilisation efforts.
They further portrayed him as the “most prepared, experienced and winnable candidate” for the NPP’s future, highlighting his vision for digitalisation, economic transformation, infrastructure development, human capital growth, agricultural modernisation and good governance.
The group pledged to work actively with Dr Bawumia to secure victory in both the party’s presidential primaries and future general elections, while calling on party members to unite behind his candidacy in the broader interest of the NPP and the nation.
