Former MP Ras Mubarak Sues MTN Ghana for $5M Over Roaming Service Failure

Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Abdulai Mohammed Mubarak, popularly known as Ras Mubarak, has filed a $5 million lawsuit against Scancom PLC, operators of MTN Ghana, over alleged failure to provide roaming services during a recent trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In his writ, Mubarak, a long-time MTN Ghana customer of over 20 years, claimed he heavily depends on the telecom giant’s services for business and personal errands, particularly during his frequent travels.

Before traveling to the UAE in September, Mubarak activated MTN’s roaming service on his device. However, upon arrival, he was unable to access his mobile network despite multiple attempts. The disruption rendered him incapable of making or receiving calls, sending text messages, or using internet services for an entire week.

Mubarak stated that his repeated complaints to MTN Ghana were unaddressed, leaving him stranded and causing significant damage to his business. He alleged that the network failure led to lost business opportunities, reputational harm, and financial difficulties, as he could not communicate with business associates or attend scheduled meetings.

The former MP also disclosed that his inability to send money home during his trip affected his family, forcing him to rely on loans from employees and associates. He further cited severe emotional and psychological distress, compounded by embarrassment as a public figure.

In the lawsuit, Mubarak is demanding $5 million in damages for business losses, inconvenience, and emotional anguish. He is also requesting that MTN Ghana cover additional expenses incurred during his pursuit of justice.

MTN Ghana is yet to comment on the matter. The case underscores the importance of reliable telecom services, especially for customers relying on critical international connectivity.
