Former Akonta Mining GM Exposes Wontumi’s Broken Promises: GH¢20K and Land Cruiser V8 Downgraded to GH¢4K Fuel Allowance

The former General Manager of Akonta Mining Limited has accused New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, of reneging on promises of GH¢20,000 cash and a Toyota Land Cruiser V8, delivering only GH¢4,000 for fuel expenses instead.
In a dramatic revelation during an ongoing legal battle over unlawful mineral rights assignment, Emmanuel Tsornyake, the ex-GM, testified on Thursday that Wontumi lured him with lavish incentives to facilitate the company’s operations but failed to honor most commitments. “He promised GH¢20,000 and a Land Cruiser V8… but I got GH¢4,000 for fuel,” Tsornyake said in court, claiming the shortfall hampered Akonta’s projects.
The case, Republic v. Akonta Mining Ltd. and Chairman Wontumi, stems from allegations of illegal gold concession grants in the Ashanti Region, with the OSP probing potential corruption. Tsornyake, a key witness, alleged Wontumi’s influence secured licenses but left the company financially strained.
Wontumi, facing charges of conspiracy and unlawful mining under the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), has denied the claims, calling them “fabricated.” His lawyer, Kofi Wood, dismissed the testimony as “vendetta-driven.”
