“Forfeit your positions or face punishment if you fail to properly maintain our stadiums” – Government Spokesperson
Hon. Fuseini Issah, Government Spokesperson for the Ministry of Information and former Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, has sternly warned authorities responsible for the country’s stadia to forfeit their positions or face punishment if they fail to properly maintain the facilities.
The HO multi-purpose sports complex, commissioned in 2023 and host of Ghana’s Independence Day ceremony the same year, has deteriorated significantly within a year, sparking public concern.
Similarly, other sports facilities like the Azuma Nelson Sports Complex, Axim Youth Resources Centre, Essipong Stadium, and Dormaa Sports Complex, which received substantial government investment, have been neglected without a maintenance culture.
Despite public concern and football enthusiasts’ outcry, the sporting authorities seem unbothered.
However, Hon. Fuseini Issah expressed worry about the national teams’ struggles to find FIFA-approved stadiums for CAF assignments.
He recalled how the government invested heavily in stadium construction before CAN 2008, only for them to fall into disrepair due to poor attitude and management.
Emphasizing the need for accountability, Hon. Fuseini Issah demanded that responsible authorities either maintain the facilities properly or face consequences.
He suggested that the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority consider privatizing the facilities if management becomes a problem.
