EU Unveils $32.6M Plan to Curb Senegal Migration Crisis Amid Rising Deaths
EU Launches 30-Million-Euro Migration Plan
Dakar, Senegal – The European Union has unveiled a comprehensive 30-million-euro plan to address the growing migration crisis in Senegal, where numerous individuals risk their lives annually attempting to reach Europe.
Key Highlights:
– 30-million-euro package to enhance border security and awareness
– Combating migrant smuggling and human trafficking
– Strengthening Senegalese authorities’ capabilities
– Supporting sustainable development and opportunities for young people
European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, announced the initiative in Dakar, emphasizing the EU’s commitment to saving lives and preventing irregular departures.
“The European Union is committed to supporting Senegal in addressing the root causes of migration and creating opportunities for its citizens,” Urpilainen stated.
The plan follows a devastating boat accident off Senegal’s coast in September, resulting in at least 39 deaths. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has pledged to track down migrant traffickers.
