Electoral Commission Denounces False Voter Registration Claims in Viral Videos

The Electoral Commission (EC) has alerted the police to a video circulating on social media, in which two women falsely allege that the commission is conducting secret voter transfers and registrations. The EC has firmly refuted these claims, stating that voter registration and transfers concluded on May 29 and July 5, 2024, respectively.

In a press statement dated July 15, 2024, and signed by EC Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, the commission called for the urgent arrest and prosecution of those responsible for these “fabrications.”

“We urge all stakeholders, especially the Political Parties, to avoid propagating falsehoods which have the potential of undermining state institutions and destroying the peace and stability of our nation,” the statement emphasized.

Attached below is a copy of the EC’s statement:

IGNORE FALSE CLAIMS MADE AGAINST THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION IN TWO VIDEOS CIRCULATING ON SOCIAL MEDIA
The Commission has taken note of two videos circulating on social media, depicting two women purporting to be members of a Political Party. Both women falsely accuse the Commission of registering voters and undertaking a Transfer of Votes Exercise.

The Commission states categorically that both allegations are FALSE.

It is obvious that this calculated mischief is aimed at tarnishing the image of the Commission and causing disaffection for the Commission in the lead up to the General Election in December 2024.

For the information of the Public, the Commission concluded the 2024 Limited Voter Registration Exercise on the 29th of May 2024.

The Application for the Transfer of Votes ended on the 14th of June 2024 but was reopened for students in Public Universities, Prisoners, as well as personnel of the Security Agencies from Wednesday 3rd July to Friday 5th July 2024.

Indeed, all the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits used for the Transfer for students were deactivated after the Exercise. Therefore, they could not have been used to register voters or undertake transfers as alleged by the two in the video.

Surprisingly, the persons making the allegations in the videos provided no evidence. The videos do not show images of registration kits or materials used for the purported Exercise. Neither was any EC Official seen in the video.

The Commission finds these allegations dangerous to our democratic process and we entreat the General Public to disregard them.

We call on the Ghana Police Service to arrest and prosecute those behind these fabrications as a matter of urgency.

We urge all stakeholders, especially the Political Parties, to avoid propagating falsehoods which have the potential of undermining state institutions and destroying the peace and stability of our nation.
