Election Commission Issues Warning to Victor Font Over Alleged Breach of Silence Period in Barcelona Presidential Vote

The Election Commission for FC Barcelona’s presidential elections has issued an official warning to candidate Victor Font for allegedly violating the mandatory election silence period.

The commission claims Font sent emails to club members during the prohibited timeframe, urging them to vote for him in today’s election.

In response, Font’s campaign team released a statement strongly defending the messages and denying any breach of regulations.

“The message sent to supporters did not contain campaign content. It was simply an invitation to participate, providing practical details like voting dates and polling locations,” the statement read.

The campaign further clarified that an interview with Font published on Saturday had been recorded the previous Tuesday, meaning the campaign had no control over its timing or release during the silence period.

“Furthermore, the interview published on Saturday was recorded last Tuesday; the campaign is not responsible for the timing of its publication.”

The election silence period, which prohibits any form of campaigning or voter persuasion in the final hours before polls open, is strictly enforced to ensure a fair process. Violations can lead to warnings, fines, or — in severe cases — disqualification, though the current sanction appears limited to a formal warning.

Today marks a pivotal day for FC Barcelona as members head to the polls to elect the club’s next president, with the vote coinciding with a La Liga match against Sevilla at Camp Nou. Acting President Rafa Yuste earlier called for maximum participation, describing it as “a very special day that showcases this club’s democracy.”

Victor Font, a prominent candidate promising financial restructuring and a return to competitive success, is one of several contenders vying to succeed the current leadership. The outcome will be announced after polls close at 9 p.m. local time.

The Election Commission has not yet indicated whether further action will be taken against Font, but the warning has added an extra layer of tension to an already high-stakes election day.
