Egypt Takes Helm of African Union Peace and Security Council for October

Presidency Aims to Strengthen PSC Role Amid Escalating Security Challenges

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Egypt has taken over the presidency of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the month of October.

According to Mohamed Gad, Egypt’s ambassador to Ethiopia and permanent representative to the AU, Egypt’s presidency comes amid rising security concerns across Africa.

Objectives:

– Bolster PSC role in addressing pressing security issues
– Align with AU’s Agenda 2063 for peace, security, and sustainable development
– Enhance collaboration with United Nations on peacebuilding

Key Initiatives:

– PSC visit to Cairo for interactive session with Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs
– PSC’s first visit to Port Sudan since Sudan crisis erupted in April 2023
– Strengthening ties with UN on peacebuilding and securing funding for African peace operations
– Countering terrorism and addressing climate change’s impact on security

Egypt’s Leadership:

– Unanimously elected to PSC in February 2024 for two-year term
– Represents North Africa in 15-member council
