ecord $7.8 Billion Diaspora Remittances Justify Government’s Evacuation Efforts – Ablakwa

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has highlighted the massive contribution of Ghanaians living abroad to the national economy, citing a record $7.8 billion in remittances received in 2025 as justification for the government’s swift action to evacuate citizens from danger zones.

The minister made the remarks on Saturday night, June 6, 2026, while welcoming the second batch of approximately 340 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa following a surge in xenophobic attacks.

According to data from the Bank of Ghana, remittances jumped sharply from $4.6 billion in 2024 to nearly $7.8 billion in 2025, now accounting for roughly 6% of the country’s GDP. This places diaspora inflows second only to gold exports, which generated $11.6 billion in 2024.

Mr. Ablakwa told the returnees that the government’s decision to evacuate affected citizens was not only a constitutional duty but also a recognition of the vital role the diaspora plays in national development.

“Last year, Ghanaians in the diaspora made history. Your remittances amounted to US$7.8 billion according to the Bank of Ghana,” he said.

He stressed that many in the diaspora make significant sacrifices to support families back home with food, education, healthcare, and business capital.

“Ghanaians in the diaspora are not selfish. They send remittances home and take care of others back home,” the minister noted.

Mr. Ablakwa assured the evacuees that the government is working on comprehensive support for their reintegration, including employment opportunities and compensation for lost businesses and properties. He disclosed that about 200 jobs have already been secured through partnerships with local companies and entrepreneurs.

He urged the returnees to channel their skills, experience, and entrepreneurial spirit into contributing to Ghana’s growing economy, noting that the country’s improving stability is attracting both local and foreign investment.

The second batch of evacuees brings the total number of Ghanaians successfully repatriated from South Africa to nearly 700. A third flight carrying over 300 more passengers is expected to arrive on Sunday, June 7.

The government has reiterated its commitment to protecting Ghanaians abroad and supporting their safe return and reintegration whenever they face threats to their lives and livelihoods.
