EC Takes Action Against Registration Officer Found Complicit in Fraudulent Voter Registration
The Electoral Commission (EC) has warned its temporary officials undertaking the ongoing limited voter registration exercise that it will not countenance a breach of its electoral laws.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has taken swift action against a Registration Officer at the Pusiga District Registration Centre in the Upper East Region who was found to be complicit in fraudulent voter registration.
According to a statement issued by the EC, the officer was dismissed and a report was made to the police, leading to his arrest. The officer was granted a police enquiry bail while investigations continue.
The incident occurred on May 13, 2024, when a Data Entry Clerk noticed suspicious Ghana Card numbers on 17 registration forms. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the Ghana Card numbers were fake and had been provided by party agents who had accompanied the 17 applicants.
The EC statement said that the officer failed to physically inspect the Ghana Card of individual applicants, instead accepting the fake numbers from the party agents. The applicants were subsequently registered through the guarantor system.
The EC assured all stakeholders and the general public that the voters registration exercise is being conducted in a transparent and inclusive manner. Despite challenges encountered on the first two days, the Commission is on schedule to register the projected 623,000 voters by the end of the exercise.
The EC called on citizens to cooperate and be vigilant to ensure that the remaining period of the registration is peaceful and successful.
