EC Fixes March 3 for Ayawaso East Parliamentary By-Election

The Electoral Commission (EC) has fixed Tuesday, March 3, 2026, for the conduct of a parliamentary by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.

Mr Toure passed away on January 4, 2026, creating a vacancy in Parliament.

In a statement issued on January 16, the Commission said the by-election is being organised in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, as amended.

“The Electoral Commission wishes to announce for the information of the general public that following the unfortunate death of the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency, Hon. Mahama Naser Toure, the seat of the Constituency in Parliament has become vacant,” the statement said.

It added that nominations for prospective parliamentary candidates will be received at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office of the Commission at North Ridge from Monday, February 9 to Wednesday, February 11, 2026, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.

Interested candidates are required to download nomination forms from the EC’s official website between Friday, January 16 and Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

According to the Commission, nomination forms may be submitted personally by candidates or through their proposer or seconder to the Returning Officer within the stated period.

Each nomination must be proposed and seconded by two registered voters in the constituency and supported by 18 other registered voters who assent to the nomination. The forms must also include the candidate’s written consent.

Candidates are also required to submit two recent postcard-sized photographs against a red background, clearly showing the full face and ears.

The EC has set the filing fee at GH¢10,000 per candidate. However, female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500. All nomination forms must be submitted in quadruplicate.

The statement was signed by the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey.

The late Mahama Naser Toure has since been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic traditions.
