EC Chair, Deputies Have No Basis to Remain in Office — Fifi Kwetey

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, says the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) and her deputies lack justification to remain in office following petitions challenging their conduct.

Speaking on Wednesday, Mr Kwetey stressed that although due process must be respected, the allegations raised against the leadership of the EC strike at the core of Ghana’s democratic system.

“I’m not going to jump the gun. If the petitions have been submitted, let due process be followed,” he said.

However, he argued that the substance of the accusations goes beyond partisan politics and represents a serious breach of democratic principles.

“For me, that is the biggest crime that can ever be committed,” Mr Kwetey stated. “Any group that supervises that has clearly no reason to remain in office.”

According to him, the alleged actions amount to an assault on the fundamental right of citizens to be represented through credible elections.

“That’s the biggest crime you can commit in any democracy — to take away the right of people to be represented,” he added. “So it’s not so much about what I want, but about what is fundamentally wrong.”

His remarks come amid growing public scrutiny of the Electoral Commission following petitions seeking the removal of its Chairperson and deputies, a development that has reignited debate over the credibility and independence of the electoral management body.

Responding to suggestions that the calls for removal were driven by the NDC leadership, Mr Kwetey rejected the claim, insisting the sentiment reflects broader public opinion.

“I believe that if an independent survey were conducted, a vast majority of Ghanaians would want them gone,” he said. “This is not about a general secretary or a party chairman. It is about the will of the people
