Dr. Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed to Be Laid to Rest Sunday in Accra

Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Ghana’s Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, will be buried on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at the Military Cemetery in Accra, following Islamic customs.

The two were among the eight lives lost in the tragic Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crash on August 6 in the Adansi-Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

Prior to the burial, Muslim Janazah prayers will be held at the Forecourt of the State House to honor the deceased. The crash, which occurred en route from Accra to Obuasi, also claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, former Ashanti Regional Minister Samuel Sarpong, former MP Samuel Aboagye, and crew members Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Sierra Leone’s President and ECOWAS Chairman Julius Maada Bio visited Ghana on August 8 to offer condolences, signing a book of condolence and laying a wreath. The tragedy has sparked calls for action against illegal mining (galamsey), with figures like Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng urging accountability for influential backers. Dr. Pet-Paul Wepeba, President of the Ghana Academy of Forensic Sciences, emphasized the need for public education on evidence preservation, citing mishandling at the crash site that compromised forensic analysis.

In a separate development, President John Mahama fulfilled a campaign promise by delivering ten fully-furnished churches to the Assemblies of God in northern Ghana, though some on X questioned his consistency given his opposition to the National Cathedral project. Meanwhile, Nigerian singer Mr. Eazi and Temi Otedola celebrated their wedding in Iceland, a moment of joy amid Ghana’s mourning.

The nation joins in prayer for Dr. Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, with hopes that their souls find peace in Jannah and their families find comfort.
